Day 12 - It's Circle Time!
Many of us have fond memories of spending a good part of our school day sitting on brightly colored rugs that had alphabet letters, numbers, or shapes on them. That’s where we learned the days of the week, listened to stories read by our teachers and participated in the long-lived tradition of “Show and Tell.”
In many of our Believe In Me schools, located inside Chinese orphanages, that time for sharing and learning takes place while children sit at tables. So why is sitting on the floor together so important? The close proximity of sitting together encourages eye contact, language skills, listening skills and most importantly, a feeling of belonging. A soft floor area also provides a space for constructive play and physical therapy, which encourages gross and fine motor skills development.
This time of togetherness is even more important for the children of our schools, who don’t go home at the end of the school day to share stories, joys, achievements and worries with their families. Thank you for helping us to give them a comfortable, inviting place where they can belong!
